SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara women's tennis announced that Maddie Pothoff is transferring from Alabama to join the program on Tuesday.

Pothoff, a 5-9 native of Tucson, Arizona, had a very successful freshman campaign for the Crimson Tide. Along with her partner Erin Routliffe, Pothoff earned a runner-up finish in the doubles competition of the NCAA Tournament. The duo finished the year ranked No. 2 by the International Tennis Association (ITA) and boasted a 13-3 record for the dual season.

"We are really excited to bring Maddie to Santa Clara," head coach Ben Cabell said. "We're excited to have somebody of her caliber joining the team. She could have gone to any college in the country and she chose us and that's awesome for her and for our program."

"I think she's going to be a really good fit for what we do here both on and off the court," Cabell said. "She already has some friends on our team which will only help her fit in seamlessly with us."

Pothoff was 12-16 for the season in singles action and 5-12 during dual play, playing the majority of her matches on court five.

Prior to Alabama, she won one Gold Ball, four Silver Balls and three Bronze Balls in the USTA National Doubles competition. She also won two USTA National gold medals in singles play and collected five silver medals in doubles play. TennisRecruiting.net labeled her as a blue chip recruit and she was ranked as high as ninth in the nation. She trained at two different tennis academies during high school in South Florida and Georgia and also traveled to South America, Central America and the Caribbean for several junior international tennis tournaments

"When we were recruiting her we got some great recommendations from coaches and friends about her so we think she's going to be an all-around great package," Cabell said."

Pothoff graduated from Arizona Connections Academy in Tucson with a 4.0 GPA and she was a member of the National Honor Society.
