SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Preseason national rankings were released last week and a Santa Clara women's tennis doubles duo is among the best.

Junior Madison Clarke and sophomore Maddie Pothoff, a transfer from Alabama, are No. 19 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's doubles rankings.

"This year being on a new team Maddie Pothoff and Madison Clarke are starting off ranked 19th in the country, which is the highest doubles ranking team we have ever had by far and they haven't even played a match together yet," said head coach Ben Cabell. "That's a great start for us just to be recognized, one for what Maddie's done and obviously having Madison jump right in for what she has been able to do as well."

Last season, Clarke paired with Danielle Silva and that twosome earned All-WCC Double Second team after posting a 15-7 overall record, including 6-2 in league matches. Clarke was also the team's top singles player, registering an 18-6 mark during 2016-17.

Last season, Pothoff partnered with Erin Routliffe to earn a runner-up finish at the NCAA Doubles Championships for the Crimson Tide. They registered 16 total doubles victories, including 11 wins since the start of the spring season.

Clarke and Pothoff will compete in the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships next week as a doubles team.
