Battle in the Bay Classic Draws/Results

SAN FRANCISCO – After winning matches on Friday, Zeina El Tawil and Katya Tabachnik of Santa Clara women's tennis were both upended in singles during Saturday's action at the Battle in the Bay Classic, a six-team, 16-player event at the California Tennis Club.

El Tawil and Tabachnik were hoping to advance to Sunday's finals.

"We're really proud of both Zeina and Katya in their first tournament of season. They played welll," head coach Ben Cabell said.

El Tawil, who defeated Margarita Treyes of host San Francisco 6-0, 6-4 in a round of 16 match on Friday, was knocked off by third-seeded Emma Wilson of Fresno State 6-3, 6-1 in Saturday's quarterfinal round.

Tabachnik, playing in her first collegiate tournament, fell to Juliane Triebe of Fresno State 6-1, 6-0 in the semifinals of the consolation bracket. Tabachnik downed Shanna Dos Santos of San Francisco on Friday.

"We're really excited about Katya's performance against Dos Santos from USF who is a really good player," Cabell said.

El Tawil, beginning her final year, is expected to be a key cog for the Broncos.

"Zeina, our senior captain, is off to a good start this year and will continue to be one of our leaders," Cabell said.

The three-day event, which also features players from Pacific, San Jose State, USC, concludes Sunday with finals in both the men's and women's draws.

Next week, the Broncos will send players to both the Cal Nike Invitational and the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships.
