Santa Clara women's tennis took part in two tournaments on Friday, with Madison Clarke and Maddie Pothoff competing in the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades, California and four Broncos playing the opening day at the Saint Mary's Invitational in Moraga, California.
PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – The Clarke and Pothoff duo played in the main draw's consolation bracket on Friday after losing a tight match to Syracuse's Gabriela Knutson and Miranda Ramirez, 8-7(1), the day before. Knutson/Ramirez have advanced all the way to the semifinals in the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championship where the top-16 Division I doubles teams are invited.
In the consolation bracket, Clarke and Pothoff fell to Northwestern's Erin Larner and Lee Or, 8-4, ending their run in the tournament.
Clarke and Pothoff were the first participants in the prestigious championships under SCU head coach Ben Cabell who is entering his 11th year at the helm.
MORAGA, Calif. – At the Saint Mary's Invitational, Elvena Gevargiz was the lone Bronco among four to advance as the freshman plays its round of 16 match on Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
An all-underclassmen squad of freshmen Gevargiz and Nadine Del Carmen along with sophomores Caitlyn Frankel and Delaney Nothaft began competition on the Timothy Korth Tennis Complex on Friday.
Gevargiz defeated Eastern Washington's Faye Worrall in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, and will play Sacramento State's Carolina Chernyetsky.
