MORAGA, Calif. – Santa Clara women's tennis players Elvena Gevargiz and Delaney Nothaft each won a singles match and played together as a doubles team to win another match in day two of the Saint Mary's Invitational on Saturday.
Coming off a win on Friday, freshman Gevargiz carried the momentum onto the courts at Timothy Korth Tennis Complex by defeating Sacramento State's Carolina Chernyetsky in three sets, 6-3, 6-7 (4-6), 6-3, to advance to the quarterfinals.
Gevargiz played San José State's Jackie Wagner in the quarterfinals, losing 6-1, 6-4.
Bronco sophomore Nothaft also advanced to the quarterfinals but in the consolation bracket before falling to Sonoma State's Amanda Zuidema, 6-3, 6-3.
In doubles competition, the Gevargiz and Nothaft duo defeated Sacramento State's Frana Ugarkovic/Sofia Wicker, 8-3, in the first round of the consolation bracket before going down 8-2 against San Francisco's Alexa Meyer and Fresno State's Abbey Watanabe.
