Women’s Tennis Hosts Nevada And Cal Poly This Week
SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Coming off a conference opening win against San Diego last weekend, Santa Clara women's tennis (3-5) looks to carry the momentum when it hosts Nevada and Cal Poly this week.

The Broncos play Nevada (3-4) on Friday at 11 a.m. and Cal Poly (3-7) on Sunday at Noon.

"Both matches are going to be tough.  We don't have any soft matches in our schedule. Playing at home and coming off last weekend's win, we feel confident but we need to make sure we don't have a let down after our conference win," said Broncos head coach Ben Cabell.

Playing on the road at San Diego last weekend, the Broncos got off to a fast start, in due to Madison Clarke and Maddie Pothoff's doubles win on court No. 1.  Their win set the tone for the match and helped earn them the West Coast Conference Doubles Team of the Week honors.

"Getting the doubles point was huge, that was the key to the match," said Cabell.  "We got off to a great start in doubles and finished it off.  We've struggled in doubles this year so for us to get going early was really important for our confidence.

"Everyone did a really nice job in singles but especially Maddie Pothoff.  She's been the rock for us.  And even though Elvena (Gevargiz) didn't get a chance to finish her match, it was huge for her because she had lost the first set but was up big in the third set.  She was about to win and it gave us a bit of a cushion.  It was great for her to come back and step up."

The Clarke and Pothoff duo are 2-0 on the year in doubles play.  Pothoff has the best singles record on the team at 6-1, having won the last six matches.

Gevargiz and Zeina El Tawil each post a 4-2 singles record for the second best singles mark on the team.

Nevada will play three matches this weekend starting with Friday's match against Santa Clara.  The Wolf Pack then travel to play at San Francisco on Saturday and Sonoma State on Sunday.

Cal Poly will face Sacramento State up in the state capitol on Saturday before making their way down to Santa Clara for Sunday's match.
