Women’s Tennis Squares Off Against San José State
SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara women's tennis will carry its three match win streak on the road when it plays at San José State on Sunday at Noon PT.

The Broncos (5-5) edged out Nevada, 4-3, and swept Cal Poly, 4-0, last weekend to face a San Jose State (9-2) squad that's won five matches in a row.

"I was happy with how we played last weekend.  The biggest thing is we are getting better," said Broncos head coach Ben Cabell.  "The win against Nevada was huge because we didn't play our best but rather we basically 'toughed' that one out.  And against Cal Poly, we played better overall and we didn't let them get into the match."

During San José State's win streak, they have played against a pair of West Coast Conference schools, defeating San Francisco, 4-0, and Portland, 5-2.

"San José State is a good team.  The players are fired up and want to beat them because it's been a couple of years since we last won against them," said Cabell.

The improved doubles play in recent weeks have helped the Broncos with their resurgence.

"Katya (Tabachnik) and Elvena (Gevargiz) have won a couple of big doubles matches for us.  Both their doubles wins at San Diego and against Nevada were huge.  I don't know that we win the match if they didn't win their doubles matches.  They're both freshmen and they're starting to get comfortable in the doubles format with the short matches and the small margin for error," said Cabell.

The freshman duo is 4-2 in doubles play on the season including winning the last three on court No. 2.  And on court No. 1, Madison Clarke and Maddie Pothoff have a 4-0 doubles record.
