WCC Tournament Berth Still In Reach for Women’s Tennis Despite Loss to LMU
SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The West Coast Conference tournament berth is still in reach for Santa Clara women's tennis despite its 4-2 loss to Loyola Marymount on Friday.  The Broncos can still clinch a spot with a win over No. 10 ranked Pepperdine on Saturday or a loss by Pacific who play at San Diego on Sunday.

The Broncos (8-11, 3-5 WCC) came out strong against LMU (14-5, 6-2 WCC) taking the doubles point.

The two teams took one match each in doubles play with the deciding match coming between the Bronco pair of Zeina El Tawil and Delaney Nothaft against the Lions pair of Elvira Juravliova and Yesica De Lucas on court three.

El Tawil and Nothaft took command of the match to lead 5-2 but Juravliova and De Lucas came back to tie it at 5-5 before heading to a tiebreak all knotted at six games apiece.  In the tiebreaker, the Lions duo went up 5-2 but the Broncos stormed back to win it 8-6.

Santa Clara looked to carry the momentum in singles play but LMU picked up three straight wins on courts six, one and five including No. 51 ranked Veronica Miroshnichenko besting No. 113 Maddie Pothoff, 6-1, 6-2 on court one.

The Broncos closed the gap to 3-2 in the match when freshman Elvena Gevargiz won a close one against Siobhan Anderson 7-6 (7-2), 7-5 on court three.

LMU sealed the win on court four when De Lucas defeated Katya Tabachnik 4-6, 6-1, 6-1.

Santa Clara will finish its regular season on Saturday hosting No. 10 ranked Pepperdine on Senior Day.  Just prior to the noon PT first serve, Bronco seniors Zeina El Tawil and Giannina Ong will be recognized.
