Cal Fall Invitational Draws/Results

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – After two players competed in the Battle in the Bay Classic Tournament in San Francisco last weekend, the full Santa Clara women's tennis squad opens its 2018 fall season on Friday at the Cal Fall Invitational.

The tournament hosted by Cal runs Friday through Sunday at the Hellman Tennis Complex and Channing Tennis Courts with players from eleven schools - BYU, Cal, Cal Poly, Fresno State, Nevada, Sacramento State, Saint Mary's, San Francisco, Santa Clara, UC Davis and UC Santa Barbara - competing in doubles and singles.

"We are excited to be competing again and see how the players do as these fall tournaments are part of getting ready for the spring season.  The players have been doing well in practice, which only started last week.  Our two newcomers, freshmen Jamie Schroer and Lindsey Pesqueira have jumped right in and are working really hard.  They are going to be nice additions to the team," said Ben Cabell who is starting his 12th season as the head coach of the Broncos.

The squad will be comprised of nine members, led by All-West Coast Conference selections, senior Madison Clarke and junior Maddie Pothoff.  Clarke, a two-time All-WCC selection in both singles and doubles played mainly atop the lineup in both disciplines last season.

Pothoff enters the fall ranked No. 110 in the Oracle/ITA Collegiate Tennis Division I Women's Preseason National Rankings in singles. Like her doubles partner Clarke, the Tucson, Arizona, native was also named second team All-WCC in both singles and doubles last season while posting a team test 12-6 record in singles and recording a team-high 10 doubles wins.

Cabell also brings back five other players – juniors Caitlyn FrankelDelaney Nothaft, and sophomores Nadine Del CarmenElvena Gevargiz, Katya Tabachnik - from a team that qualified for the WCC Tournament last season.

In last year's Cal Fall Invitational, the Broncos picked up 18 singles and five doubles wins.
