Gevargiz and Schroer Lead Women’s Tennis in First Day of ITA Northwest Regional Championships

STANFORD, Calif.Elvena Gevargiz and Jamie Schroer each picked up three wins to lead Santa Clara women's tennis in the first day of the ITA Northwest Regional Championships on Friday.  The two Broncos advanced to the round of 32 in both doubles and singles by winning the opening round doubles match to go along with two singles wins.  
 
In the first round of the 64-team doubles main draw, Santa Clara got two wins from the tandem of Elvena Gevargiz/Katya Tabachnik and Jamie Schroer/Caitlyn Frankel.
 
Gevargiz and Tabachnik beat Kali McCollister and Alisa Sabotic of Seattle, 8-2, with Schroer and Frankel taking care of Eastern Washington's Madeline Lamoreaux and Zoey Nelson, 8-6, to advance to the second round on Saturday.  First serve is at 9 a.m. with Gevargiz/Tabachnik facing UC Davis' Kristina Breisacher/Sara Tsukamoto and Frankel/Schroer going against San José State's Tamara Culibrk/Alba Pedrero Galindo.  
 
Nadine Del Carmen and Lindsey Pesqueira fell 8-3 to Gonzaga's doubles team of Domonique Garley and Graciela Rosas.  
 
Unfortunately for the Broncos, its number one doubles team of Madison Clarke and Maddie Pothoff withdrew due to injuries from both doubles and singles draws.  
 
In the 128-player singles main draw, Schroer had a pair of three set wins to advance to the round of 32.  The Bronco freshman beat Portland's Emily Soares, 6-0, 6-7(4), 6-3, in the first round followed by a 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 win over Lamoreaux in the second round.  
 
Gevargiz took care of business against Stanford's Elizabeth Yao, 6-2, 6-2, in the opening round before needing three sets to beat Anna Oberg of Portland, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.  
 
Schroer and Gevargiz were the only Broncos to win its singles matches on Friday.  Schroer will next face Washington's Stacey Fung and Gevargiz will take on Oregon's Shweta Sangwan on Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
