Bronco Invitational Results for Friday, Nov. 2, 2018

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara women's tennis went 5-4 overall on Friday's first day of competition at the Bronco Invitational, going 2-1 in doubles and 3-3 in singles.
Sophomore Katya Tabachnik highlighted the day with a win each in doubles and singles.

Paired with fellow sophomore Elvena Gevargiz, Tabachnik beat Nevada's Selina Turulja and Maria Tatarnikova, 7-5.  And in the afternoon singles match, Tabachnik needed three sets to defeat San Francisco's Hanna Borjeson, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.

"I was happy with the overall performance of the team.  They did well and battled hard despite missing a two of the players.  Katya's play stood out, winning a couple of matches including a close doubles match and a three-setter in singles against a tough player.  I'm proud of her and she competed hard," said Broncos head coach Ben Cabell.

In other doubles action, Santa Clara's Jamie Schroer and Caitlyn Frankel won a close match over Nevada's Melissa Huchet and Adriana Gergelyova, 7-6(6), while the Bronco duo of Maddie Pothoff and Madison Clarke fell to Anastaysha Gorbacheva and Marta Ruedas, 6-3.

"Madison and Maddie struggled a bit but they haven't been playing so that was expected.  But we know what we are going to get from them and they're going to get themselves to their usual play so I don't worry about those two," said Cabell.  "So my focus was on the other doubles teams and they did great today.  If we have two doubles teams that can back up Madison and Maddie, we will be good in doubles."

In singles play, sophomore Nadine Del Carmen and Lindsey Pequeira picked up wins over San Francisco players.  Del Carmen over Amber Del Rosario, 6-2, 6-3, and Pesqueira over Alisha Sharma, 6-3, 6-4.

"We challenged ourselves in singles taking our top two players out.  It was nice to see Nadine and Lindsey step up to get wins," Cabell said.
