SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara women's tennis won the first doubles match to open up a rain delayed contest against Princeton, however, the Tigers won the next seven matches to beat the Broncos, 6-1, on Tuesday at the Degheri Tennis Center.
Maddie Pothoff bookended the day for the Broncos (1-1) with a win in doubles and the final singles match against No. 67 Stephanie Schrage to earn the lone Bronco point.
Pothoff teamed with Elvena Gevargiz to beat Nicole Kalhorn and Brianna Shvets, 6-2, on court one to give Santa Clara a leg up in doubles. But Princeton (2-1) took the next two matches to earn the doubles point.
On court two, Grace Joyce and Clare McKee beat Katya Tabachnik and Caitlyn Frankel, 6-2. That was followed by a 6-3 doubles point clinching win by Schrage and Nathalie Rodilosso over Jamie Schroer and Lindsey Pesqueira on court three.
Princeton continued its strong play in singles with five consecutive wins, all in straight set wins, on courts six (Tiffany Chen over Pesqueira, 6-0, 6-0), five (Joyce over Tabachnik, 6-2, 6-0), and the match clincher on court two with Shvets beating Gevargiz, 6-1, 6-2.
Santa Clara salvaged a point when Pothoff beat Schrage in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8), on court one. In the 10-point third set tiebreaker, Pothoff fell behind 2-0 but reeled off six straight points to get ahead and held off the nationally ranked Schrage.
