SANTA CLARA, Calif. – After home matches on back-to-back weekends were interrupted by rain, Santa Clara women's tennis hopes to get both its matches played when it travels to Stanford on Friday and Cal Poly on Saturday.
In what was supposed to be a five-match home stand, the Broncos finished the stretch with results in just three matches as two matches, against UC Davis and Fresno State, were postponed.
Santa Clara is coming off a tough 4-3 loss to San José State last weekend, in a match that spanned over two days due to a rain delay.
"The weather is always tough this time of the year with a lot of starts and stops and long days but we deal with it," said Broncos head coach Ben Cabell. "We were a little shorthanded this past weekend without Jamie (Schroer) so that made it difficult but the team still played well enough to give us a chance to win. Both Maddie (Pothoff) and Elvena (Gevargiz) played really well and beat some good players handily so I was pleased with that."
The Broncos (1-2) will face Stanford (5-1) featuring eight players ranked in the top-80 of the ITA rankings. On Monday, the Cardinal had its 25-match unbeaten streak snapped by No. 5 Georgia at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships, dropping them from the No. 1 spot in the ITA rankings to No. 3.
Cal Poly (1-3) is coming off a road trip to San Diego over the weekend, splitting its matches. The Mustangs swept UC San Diego, 4-0, before getting swept by San Diego State, 4-0.
"We will use the Stanford match as a gauge to test ourselves. Cal Poly's been better than they have in the past so it should be another close match," said Cabell.
