Women’s Tennis Edged by Portland in Friday’s Conference Opener
PORTLAND, Ore. – Angela Schuster clinched the team victory for Portland with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Nadine Del Carmen to complete a 4-3 comeback win over Santa Clara women's tennis on Friday.  
 
With the match tied at 3-all in the West Coast Conference opener for both squads, it all came down to court six where Schuster beat Del Carmen in straight sets to halt the Broncos two match win streak. 
 
Santa Clara (3-4, 0-1) jumped to a 3-1 lead in the team score when it reeled off three straight singles victories by Elvena Gevargiz, Jamie Schroer and Maddie Pothoff after dropping the double's point.  However, the Pilots (6-2, 1-0) evened the match with wins by Lourdes Ramalle and Marija Elenova to set the stage for the winner take all match on court six.  
 
Sophomore Elvena Gevargiz kick started the singles play with a 6-0, 7-5 win over Raphaelle Leblanc on court two.  For Gevargiz, it was her fifth-straight victory.  
 
Jamie Schroer put the Broncos up 2-1 with a straight set win over Emily Soares 6-2, 7-5 on court three.  
 
Santa Clara got up 3-1 when Maddie Pothoff earned a hard fought win over Jelena Lukic in three-sets 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 for her sixth straight win this fall, all coming on court one. 
 
Up 3-1, the match clinching point was elusive for the Broncos.  On court five, Ramalle took down Caitlyn Frankel 6-1, 6-1 and Elenova dropped Katya Tabachnik 6-4, 6-4 to tie the match at 3-all.  
 
In doubles action, Portland's Lukic and Anna Oberg clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win over Gevargiz and Pothoff on court one to snap the Bronco duo's eight-match win streak, going back to the fall.
