Pelayo Earns Academic All-District Honors

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Senior setter Roz Pelayo was named a second team Verizon Academic All-District team member, the College Sports Information Directors of America announced this afternoon.

The San Jose native has maintained a 3.57 grade point average and will earn her degree in combined sciences in the spring. On the court, Pelayo is Santa Clara's all-time assist leader and her assist average is on pace to break the NCAA career mark.

Twenty-one female student-athletes representing 15 different NCAA Division I institutions were selected. District VIII includes schools from the states of Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Washington, as well as Canadian province of British Columbia.

In order to be eligible for Academic All-America honors, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average, bust be a starter or an important reserve and be in at least their second season of competition.

The 16th-ranked Broncos (24-3, 11-1 WCC) are at home this weekend fighting for the West Coast Conference title. Wins over No. 22 Loyola Marymount tomorrow night and No. 12 Pepperdine on Saturday will assure Santa Clara the conference title and the automatic entry into the NCAA Tournament. Both matches are slated to begin at 7 p.m. at the Pat Malley Center. Saturday's match will also honor Pelayo and the team's other four seniors, as they will be playing the last home match of their collegiate careers.
