TEMPE, Ariz. - Santa Clara, ranked 22nd nationally, defeated Nevada in five games to close out play at the 12th Annual Phoenix Airport Hilton/Sun Devil Challenge this evening at the Wells Fargo Arena. Game scores were 30-32, 30-23, 30-25, 21-30, 15-8.

Earlier in the day, the Broncos fell to 23rd-ranked South Carolina 30-25, 30-21, 30-25, and are now 3-1 on the year.

The Gamecocks outhit Santa Clara .266 to .125 and outblocked the Broncos 10-5 in the afternoon match.

Santa Clara was led offensively by sophomore outside hitter Becky Potter's 13 kills. Freshman middle blocker Toni Muratore registered one less kill while senior attacker Jami Bari also reached double digits with 10 kills.

Defensively, it was senior Merrin Thompson and junior Chrissy Hirsch with 13 and 11 digs, respectively.

Statistics for the second game were not immediately available.

The Broncos return to the Bay Area for a road game at San Jose State on Tuesday night. The action will begin at 7 p.m. at the Event Center.
