    SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Four Broncos posted double-digit kills to lead the 24th-ranked Santa Clara University volleyball team to a straight-set victory over No. 13 UC Santa Barbara at the SCU Invitational, hosted by the Fremont Marriott, tonight at the Leavey Center. Game scores were 31-29, 30-24, 30-20.

    The match marked only the first victory for the Broncos over the Gauchos since the 1984 season, and second overall. The series between the schools now stands at 2-15. Santa Clara improves to 2-0 at the tournament, 6-1 on the season. UCSB falls to 1-1 in tournament, 1-3 on the year.

    In the evening's earlier match, North Carolina's Nicole Reis recorded 29 kills as the Tar Heels defeated Creighton 20-30, 30-26, 31-29, 30-21. With the victory, UNC improves to 1-1 in tournament play, 4-2 overall, while Creighton moves to 0-2 at the Invitational, 1-4 on the year.

    Defense played an even bigger role than the offensive firepower the Broncos displayed tonight. Sophomore Becky Potter and senior Jami Bari each posted 15 digs as SCU outdug the Gauchos 84-56 leading the visitors to a low .070 hitting percentage. Also reaching double figures for the Broncos were junior Cindy Hirsch with 13 and junior Chrissy Hirsch and senior Merrin Thompson, each with 11 digs.

    Leading the Gauchos was Danielle Bauer, with 13 kills and 15 digs.

    The SCU Invitational concludes Sunday afternoon at the Leavey Center. UCSB will close out play against Creighton at 11 a.m., followed by the Broncos match against North Carolina at 1:30 p.m.
