Volleyball Sweeps Portland on the Road

PORTLAND, Ore. - The 20th-ranked Santa Clara University volleyball swept Portland in West Coast Conference action tonight at the Chiles Centre. Game scores were 30-16, 30-22, 30-26.

With the victory, the Broncos remain in second place in the league standings, with a 16-7 overall mark and a 8-2 record in the WCC. Portland falls to 5-15, 1-9.

The Bronco duo of freshman middle blocker Toni Muratore and sophomore middle blocker Becky Potter carried the Broncos. Muratore had 11 kills on 14 attempts with no errors giving her a percentage of .786. Potter had 18 kills and 1 error on 33 attempts giving her a .515 percentage. Potter also had three aces and six digs on the night.

The first game was close early on with the Broncos leading the Pilots 10-9. The Broncos pulled ahead and did not look back winning the game 30-16. Two Pilots moved into the top ten in career leader categories during the first game. Bridget DeChant entered the top ten in kills and now is tenth all-time with 785 kills. Bridget Beschen is now tenth all-time in digs with 895 digs.

In the second game the Pilots were led by Anna Abatzoglou who had eight kills. It was not enough however as the Pilots lost the game 22-30.

The third game of the night was very hard fought with the Broncos pulling it out 30-26. Abatzoglou finished the match with a career high, tying 16 kills on 23 attempts giving her a career-high attack percentage of .652.

The Broncos continue West Coast Conference action tomorrow night at Gonzaga. That match will start at 5 p.m. in Spokane.
