No. 14 Volleyball Defeats LMU 3-1

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The 14th-ranked Santa Clara University volleyball team overcame a tough start in game one en route to a 3-1 victory over Loyola Marymount Friday evening in the Leavey Center. The win gives the Broncos seven-straight overall and six-straight over LMU dating back to 1999.

Despite losing game one by a 30-28 score, the Broncos (16-2, 5-0 WCC) came out in game two and hit .512 as a team leading to a 30-23 win to even the match at one game apiece. Games three and four saw much of the same with Santa Clara posting wins of 30-20 and 30-23, moving their record at the Leavey Center to 4-0 in 2002.

Becky Potter led all players with 28 kills, 26 of which came in the first three games, while Kelli Sousa set a new career-high with her 72 assists on the evening. Cindy Hirsch also set a new career mark with her match-high 24 digs, with twin sister Chrissy Hirsch adding 16 digs on the evening.

Freshman Cassie Perret posted 18 kills on the evening, while fellow rookie Alyssa Lantz posted 13. Becky Biniek had 12 kills while Megan Johnston played an all-around good game with her 11 kills and 16 digs.

Kristen Gallup led the offensive charge for LMU with her 17 kills while Kealani Kimball trailed closely behind with 16. Tiana Newsome rounded out the Lions in double-digit kills with 11, with Laura Gustorf posting a team-high 16 digs in the match.

The Broncos return to action tomorrow night with a huge match against No. 12 Pepperdine at 7 p.m. in the Leavey Center. The Waves enter Saturday night's match with an 18-match win streak in West Coast Conference play, with their last loss coming at Santa Clara on November 19, 2000.
