No. 12 Volleyball Defeats Sacramento State 3-1

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The 12th-ranked Santa Clara University women's volleyball team overcame a lethargic start in game one to defeat Sacramento State by a score of 3-1 Tuesday night in the Leavey Center. After dropping game one by a 30-22 count, the Broncos (18-3) rebounded to take the next three games by scores of 30-17, 30-27 and 30-21.

Junior All-American candidate Becky Potter proved she belonged among the nation's elite with her 26 kills on 45 attempts with only six errors for a match-high .444 hitting percentage. National assist leader Kelli Sousa continued her sparkling play with 65 assists and 10 digs on the night.

Freshman Alyssa Lantz suffered through a rough start in which she had six hitting errors in the first game, but rebounded from there on out to finish the match with 15 kills on 44 attempts with only three more errors after game one. Cassie Perret and Megan Johnston each added 12 kills on the evening while Becky Biniek rounded out the Broncos in double-digit kills with her 10.

Cindy Hirsch posted a match-high 20 digs on the evening while her twin sister and fellow co-captain, Chrissy Hirsch, registered 16 digs in the match. Potter added 15 digs to go along with her match-high 26 kills.

Jayme Wright led the way for the Hornets (17-9) with her 15 kills on the night, while Sandra Bandimere and Kazmiera Imrie added 13 and 10 kills, respectively to round out the Sac State players in double-digits. Wright added a team-leading 19 digs on the night while Lisa Beauchene added 11 digs and four block assists.

Santa Clara returns to West Coast Conference action this weekend as they travel to Moraga, Calif., to take on Saint Mary's Friday evening at 7 p.m. The Broncos will then travel to San Diego where they will face the University of San Diego Saturday night at 7 p.m. as well. Santa Clara is currently 6-1 in WCC action, just one game behind conference leader, No. 10 Pepperdine.
