No. 12 Volleyball Sweeps Saint Mary's

MORAGA, Calif. - The 12th-ranked Santa Clara University volleyball squad defeated Saint Mary's College by a score of 3-0 Friday evening in Moraga, Calif. With the win the Broncos improve to 19-3 overall and 7-1 in West Coast Conference play.

Santa Clara posted wins by scores of 30-23 in the first two games and wrapped up the match in the third game, winning by a score of 30-21. The win marked the 12th-straight time the Broncos have defeated the Gaels, sweeping the season series in each of the last six years.

Freshman Alyssa Lantz led the Broncos on the evening with her 15 kills, followed by Becky Potter and Megan Johnston who each had 11 on the evening. Kelli Sousa guided the offense with her 40 assists while her 16 digs were a match-high. Chrissy Hirsch added 13 digs in the Libero position and Becky Biniek posted a .615 hitting percentage on the night, with her eight kills coming on 13 attempts with no errors.

As a team Santa Clara hit .260 on the night while limiting the Gaels (5-15, 2-6 WCC) to a .076 attack percentage. The Broncos posted 14 more digs, 21 more assists and three more service aces than Saint Mary's, but were out-blocked by a 9.5 to 8.0 margin.

Jill Parmele led the SMC attack with nine kills, followed by Lindsey Bogason and Rachel Avilla who each added eight kills in the match. Brooke Lowry registered 24 assists while Kaui Salzman's 15 digs were a team-high for the Gaels.

Santa Clara continues its brief two-match WCC roadtrip Saturday night as they take on the University of San Diego at 7 p.m. in the Jenny Craig Pavillion on the campus of USD.
