No. 11 Volleyball Drops Heartbreaker in Malibu

MALIBU, Calif. - The 11th-ranked Santa Clara University women's volleyball team dropped a dramatic five-game match to No. 9 Pepperdine Friday night in Malibu, Calif. Game scores were 25-30, 30-20, 30-21, 26-30 and 15-13.

The Broncos (22-4, 10-2 WCC) were led on the evening by junior Becky Potter's match-high 27 kills. Becky Biniek accumulated 19 kills to go along with six blocks and a solid .533 hitting percentage while freshman outside hitter Alyssa Lantz added 17 kills for the Broncos.

Senior Chrissy Hirsch totaled a match-high total of 20 digs for Santa Clara, while fellow co-captin Cindy Hirsch posted 18 on the evening. Megan Johnston added 16 digs with Cassie Perret rounding out the Broncos in double-digit kills with 11.

Pepperdine notched a team hitting percentage of .301 and held Santa Clara to a .240 team attack mark. The Waves outblocked the Broncos by a 13-10 margin.

All-American Katie Wilkins posted 23 kills to go along with three service aces, 10 digs and six total blocks as Pepperdine won its 11th consecutive match and improved to 20-6 overall and remained perfect in WCC play with an 11-0 mark.

Stacy Rouwenhurst posted 19 kills and a hitting percentage of .607 while teammate Lyndsey Hache added 17 kills and a .433 hitting percentage. Paola Rodriguez played an all-around good match for the Waves, registering 54 assists and 14 digs in the match. Katy Daly and Breegan Mulligan both totaled 15 digs to lead the Pepperdine defense.

Santa Clara continues its current roadtrip Saturday evening with a 7 p.m. match at Loyola Marymount. The Broncos have won their last six meetings with the Lions including a 3-1 win in the Leavey Center earlier this year.
