SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara University women's volleyball standout Becky Potter made program history Wednesday morning as she was named AVCA Second Team All-America at a news conference in New Orleans, La. She becomes the first Bronco Volleyball player to earn All-American status after becoming only the second player in program history to earn All-Pacific Region honors last week.
"When I heard about it I just started shaking," said Potter, who heard the news from Jon Wallace while she was at her parents' home in Clovis, Calif.
"Becky has not only raised her play to a higher level, but this program as well," said Wallace. "She is not only a remarkable competitor, but a remarkable person as well. She embodies everything that we look for in student-athletes. No one is more deserving of all the accolades she is receiving."
Potter, who came to the Mission Campus from Buchanan H.S., is re-writing much of the record books in the Bronco Volleyball media guide. This year alone she set new single-season mark in total kills (571) and kills per game (5.34), as well as setting a new record for kills in a three-game match with her 27 against Portland.
For her career she currently ranks fifth in career kills at Santa Clara with 1,272 while her 741 career digs leaves her only 259 digs shy of becoming only the sixth player in program history to reach 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in a career. Her career 4.28 kills per game average ranks second in program history with her .283 career hitting percentage ranking her fourth in program history.
Her All-America and All-Pacific Region selections add to an already stellar list of accomplishments that she has achieved this year alone. She garnered first team All-West Coast Conference honors, WCC All-Academic honors, three WCC player of the week nods and WCC player of the month honors in September. She also earned tournament MVP status at the UC Irvine/Marriott Sunset Showcase and the Northern Arizona Fiesta Bowl Classic while earning all-tournament honors at the U.S. Bank/Arby's Classic hosted by Nebraska and the Denver Invitational.
In addition to all of the individual accolades, Potter helped the Broncos to their fifth straight NCAA Tournament appearances and the third most wins in program history. Their 24-7 overall record gave the Broncos a .774 winning percentage, the second highest in program history. She also helped the Broncos to a program best national ranking of No. 11 on November 4.
