Volleyball Defeats Pacific In Three To Open Home WCC Play

Santa Clara opened its 2014 West Coast Conference season at home Tuesday night with a big 3-0 win over rival Pacific. Set scores were 25-22, 25-20 and 25-21.  Santa Clara is 11-4 and 1-1 in the WCC and Pacific is 13-3 and 2-1 in the WCC.

"We executed our game plan extremely well tonight. Our team was very focused on what they needed to do and aggressive with their execution," said Bronco head coach Jon Wallace.  "Dani led our defense and it really helped us. We moved her around tonight from left back to middle back based on our scouting report and she was all over the court tonight."

Santa Clara hit .190 with 38 kills (15 e, 121 att.). The Broncos collected 33 assists, five aces, six service errors, 53 digs and 12 team blocks.

Sabrina Clayton scored 12 kills with eight digs, two block solos, two block assists and three aces.  "Sabrina had a nice match tonight all the way around," said Wallace. "She got big kills for us.  She served the ball well. She stepped in and passed well really well in the third game. We were able to leave her one-on-one on the block because she was doing so well."

Nikki Hess and Taylor Milton both collected 10 kills each.  Hess added 10 digs.  Kirsten Mead collected 30 assists, 10 digs and three block assists.  Danielle Rottman scored 16 digs and two aces.

"Taylor played with a lot of grit tonight. After good plays or bad plays, she was really dialed in on the next play.  She was ready to do her job tonight and make plays for this team," added Wallace.  "I was very impressed with Kirsten's all-around game – her serving, defense and blocking were exceptional.  She set a great match tonight, but it was her other aspects of her game that made a real impact on the game."

UOP hit .130 with 37 kills (21 e, 123 att.). The Tigers collected 35 assists, two aces, 11 service errors, 52 digs and 4.0 team blocks.  Lexi Elman had 15 kills, hitting .195 with 10 digs.  Andie Shelton had 18 assists and Kimmy Whitson added 12.

The teams were knotted up seven times early in the first set before a Hess kill, a team block by Kaity Edwards and Mead and a kill by Clayton down the line put SCU up 10-7.  Milton knocked it off the team block again for a kill, 12-8 Broncos.  A team block by Clayton and Edwards made Pacific whistle for time.  The Broncos took a 16-9 lead before Pacific scored four of the next five points. Timeout Broncos, leading 17-13.

Pacific continued its strong play, scoring three of the next four to pull within two, 18-16 SCU. The two teams traded sideouts twice with Pacific serving it out on back-to-back sideouts.  After Pacific battled to tie it up 21-21, Santa Clara called for its second timeout. 

Santa Clara scored three of the next four to collect set point, 24-22.  Pacific was called in the net and Santa Clara won set one 25-22.  

Clayton's ace put SCU up 2-1 early in the second set before she served it long to tie it up.  UOP scored three straight and then SCU scored three straight to tie it up 5-5.  Pacific scored three straight again to pull ahead 8-5.  The Tigers were whistled in the net, Milton scored an ace and Edwards and Mead added a team block.  A block solo by Hess gave the Broncos a 9-8 lead.  Hess collected back-to-back kills to make it 11-9 SCU.  The teams tied it up twice before SCU laced together three straight.  Pacific called for time, down 15-12.  Clayton and Natasha Calkins collected a team block out of the timeout.  Clayton's ace made it 18-14.  After a Pacific tip, Hess knocked it down and Pacific called for time, trailing 19-15.

Milton's kill gave SCU a five-point lead, 20-15.  The Broncos continued to score with a kill by Milton to make the lead seven.  The Tigers got back a couple points, but Milton scored again cross-court to put SCU up 23-17.  After UOP scored a couple, SCU called for time, leading 23-19.  Elman scored an ace to make it three straight for UOP, but then she served it out and Pacific was whistled in the net to take set two, 25-20. 

UOP opened the third set on a 5-2 run.  SCU scored four of the next five to tie it up 6-6.  UOP scored three of the next four points to move ahead 9-7. Santa Clara laced together five straight on two kills by Clayton and another by Calkins. A team block by Calkins and Mead and a Tiger hitting error made it 12-9 SCU.  Timeout Pacific.  Milton smacked it down in back row for a kill, 16-13 SCU.  UOP scored three straight to tie it up at 16 each.  Timeout Broncos.

Elman served it into the net after the SCU timeout.  The teams tied it up three times before Clayton scored back-to-back kills to advance 21-19. Timeout Tigers.

Santa Clara was whistled in the net coming out of the Tigers timeout, but the UOP serve sailed wide, 22-20.  Clayton smacked it off the team block twice for two straight kills for a match point, 24-20.  Elman scored a cross court kill for a UOP sideout.  A kill by Hess in the back row gave the Broncos the match, 25-21.
