Danielle Rottman Reflects on Her Time as a Volleyball Player

SANTA CLARA, CALIF. – Santa Clara Broncos (SCB) spoke with junior Danielle Rottman (DR) of the women's volleyball team about how volleyball has always played a large role in her life.

SCB: You come from a long line of volleyball players, have you always known that you would play in college?

DR: My family is filled with competitive volleyball players so I was always peppering with my mom and dad in the backyard or competing with my sisters who also play. I grew up loving the game and knew I wanted to continue on and play at the collegiate level.

SCB: What is one of your most memorable moments as a volleyball player?

DR: I have had many memorable moments as a volleyball player so it is hard to choose just one. Off the court, one from this season is when our team had the opportunity to visit West Point. It was not only a very educational experience, but seeing and hearing what the students do to serve our country really put things in perspective and definitely inspired me to work hard for my team. What the cadets do at Army is admirable and everyone can learn a lot from their commitment and work ethic.

SCB: What made you decide to come to Santa Clara University?

DR: I decided to come to Santa Clara for two main reasons. First the school was by far my favorite that I visited. The beautiful campus and community made me realize that I wanted to come to school here. Secondly, I really enjoyed the coaches and team and wanted to be a part of this program. It really was the best decision ever! Go Broncos!

SCB: Do you have any tips for balancing school and a sport?

DR: I would say time management is key. I have learned that procrastination gets you nowhere and especially during season, it is important to stay on top of your work.  I would also tell the freshmen to value sleep more. Going through a busy day of class and practice when you are sleep deprived is really challenging and does not help you. Got to get those eight hours in!

SCB: What are your goals for this year?

DR: This year our goal as a team is to win conference and make the NCAA tournament. We have worked so hard this season and we know that we can accomplish our goal if we keep grinding, stay tougher than our opponents and WIN!
