Volleyball Knocked off by LMU at Home Thursday

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Paced by the offensive and defensive prowess of Savannah Slattery and Sarah Sponcil, Loyola Marymount was able to sweep Santa Clara volleyball 25-14, 25-19, 25-19 Thursday in a West Conference match.

Slattery (16 kills/15 digs) and Sponcil (14 kills/14 digs) each produced doubles-doubles and Jessie Prichard tallied a match-high 27 assists for the Lions (13-6, 4-3) who posted a .274 hitting percentage.

Nikki Hess had a team-best seven kills and shared team-high honors with eight digs for the Broncos (11-8, 2-5), who saw their two-match winning streak come to an end. Taylor Odom had six kills and Callie Jones registered 21 assists. Sabrina Clayton also had eight digs.

"LMU was solid at both ends and played a really good match," Santa Clara head coach Jon Wallace said.

The Broncos, who had a .082 overall hitting percentage, were in position to push the match to a fourth set after erasing a deficit in the third.

Sponcil's fifth kill of the set gave the Lions a 12-10 edge, but the Broncos scored six of the next seven points with Hess and Odom each providing a pair of kills in the run. However, LMU took advantage of three Santa Clara attack errors and got two kills from Slattery to go on a 7-0 flurry to grab a 20-16 lead. A kill by Santa Clara's Hailey Lindberg and an attack error cut the deficit to 21-19, but the Lions scored the next four points to close out the match.

In the second set, the Lions jumped out to a 7-0 lead by taking advantage of three attack errors before Sponcil contributed a pair of kills. But the Broncos started to benefit from some LMU miscues. Four attack errors helped Santa Clara cut the deficit to 12-7. The Broncos chopped the lead to four three times later in the set, including 22-18 on a Clayton ace, but three service errors helped LMU close out the set.

Back by six kills from Slattery and four by Sponcil, LMU had a blistering pace in the opening set, posting a .464 hitting percentage. The Lions used a 6-0 run, keyed by three kills from Slattery, to build a 12-4 lead. The Broncos scored the next point on a service error, but never got closer than eight the remainder of the set.

"We have a resilient team and we'll come out ready to play Saturday," Wallace said.

The Broncos are set to face Pepperdine at 1 p.m. Saturday in Leavey Center.
