Hess Named First Team All-WCC for Third Time; Mead Named Honorable Mention

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Two of Santa Clara volleyball's most decorated players added to their list of accolades when the West Coast Conference announced its volleyball season awards on Monday. Nikki Hess was named First Team All-WCC for the third straight season and Kirsten Mead received an Honorable Mention award.

All awards were voted on solely by the WCC's 10 head coaches.

Hess, one of the top players in program history, totaled 371 kills (3.47/set), 294 digs (2.75/set), 42 blocks (0.39/set) and 28 aces (0.26/set) in 2016. She had 11 double-doubles on the year in 29 matches and 107 sets. In addition to the two prior First Team All-WCC nods, Hess was named to the conference's All-Freshman team in 2013.

For her career, Hess finished third all-time among Broncos with 1,517 kills. That mark is also the best in program history for a player who spent her entire career in the rally-scoring era. She missed only two matches during her time with the Broncos, and had at least 280 kills, 234 digs, 41 blocks and 23 aces in each of her four years on the Mission campus.

Mead earned her fifth All-WCC award in the last three seasons despite missing 14 of the Broncos' 30 matches due to injury. She played in 16 matches and 57 sets this year and totaled 541 assists (9.49/set) alongside 36 kills, 132 digs, 19 blocks and 16 aces. She was named the WCC Player of the Week for Aug. 29, after Santa Clara won all three of its matches on opening weekend, including a four-set victory at No. 7 USC.
