Volleyball’s Shaffer Named to West Coast Conference All-Freshman Team

SAN BRUNO, Calif. — Santa Clara volleyball's Michelle Shaffer was named to 2018 West Coast Conference All-Freshman team, as announced by the WCC on Monday. Shaffer led the Broncos and finished second among conference freshmen with 297 kills in her debut campaign on the Mission campus.

Shaffer, an outside hitter, started all 30 matches and played in all 108 sets on the season. She led the team with 29 aces and finished second among Broncos with 294 digs.

The Thousand Oaks, California native had eight double-doubles, 10-plus kills in 13 matches and 10-plus digs in 15 matches. Pacific's Riley Ramsey was the only WCC freshman to post more kills (311).

BYU swept the conference's major awards: Player of the Year Roni-Jones Perry, Defender of the Year Mary Lake, Freshman of the Year Heather Gneiting and Coach of the Year Heather Olmstead. The Cougars are one of five conference teams to earn a berth in the NCAA Tournament (Loyola Marymount, Pepperdine, Saint Mary's, San Diego).
