South Bay Battle Tournament Preview

SANTA CLARA, Calif.Allison Kantor recorded a double-double (11 kills/12 digs), Alexa Dreyer tallied 10 kills and Michelle Shaffer had 20 assists while nearly posting a triple-double to lead Santa Clara volleyball to a 25-16, 25-17, 20-25, 25-16 victory over San Jose State in the opening match of the South Bay Battle.

Liliana Light chipped in 15 assists and 13 digs, and Julia Sangiacomo had nine kills for the Broncos (7-1) who posted a .207 attack percentage in Thursday's matchup of crosstown rivals.

Latahevai Lousi and Haylee Nelson each had 12 kills for the Spartans (3-4) who rallied in the third set, but were unable to sustain that momentum.

Leading 13-10 in the fourth set, the Broncos scored five of the next six points to take control. Taylor Odom's kill started the rally and Sangiacomo added a pair as well. A kill from Kantor extended the lead to 23-14 before the match ended on four straight service errors.

In the previous set, San Jose State led 10-5 before the Broncos battled back to take a 15-14 lead on a kill from Odom. But the Spartans scored five of the next six points as Lousi and Nelson each had a kill. Two straight attack errors extended the lead to 23-17 and Lousi closed it on a kill.

Shaffer had eight kills and nine digs as the Broncos held the Spartans to a .096 hitting percentage in the match.

The Broncos weren't as efficient offensively in the second set as the opening one (.216 to .324 hitting percentage), but a run midway through turned out to be enough. After the set was tied 7-all, Santa Clara scored seven of the next nine points. The flurry was capped by kills from Shaffer and Kantor, and a pair of Spartan attack errors.

In the opening set, Kantor posted four kills and the Broncos hit .324 to pull away from the Spartans who mustered only five kills. A Santa Clara attack error had San Jose State within 13-10, but the Broncos scored seven of the next 10 points.

Lousi had 10 digs to give her a double-double. Mamie Garard had a match-high 17 digs for the Spartans who are serving as co-hosts for the three-day tournament.
