Volleyball Falls to Marist on Day Two of the South Bay Battle

South Bay Battle Preview

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Marist did not look like a winless team on the second day of the South Bay Battle, a tournament co-hosted by Santa Clara volleyball and San José State.

Megan Fergus tallied 19 kills, Halle Carter distributed 36 assists and the Red Foxes (2-6) held the Broncos (7-2) to a season-low .179 attack percentage in claiming a 25-18, 25-21, 25-23 victory on Friday.

Julia Sangiacomo had 10 kills and Michelle Shaffer posted nine kills and 14 assists for the Broncos, who knocked off San Jose State in Thursday's tournament opener.

Marist was resilient throughout the match, especially in the third set.

After trailing most of the opening two sets, Santa Clara led by as many as seven points in the third until the Red Foxes made a run. A kill from Shaffer pushed the lead to 15-12 but two attack errors sandwiched around a service ace by Morgan Owens tied it up.

The set was tied seven more times before Marist closed it out. Marist's Sarah Austin produced two of her eight kills after the set was tied at 22-all and the match ended on an attack error, one of 18 in the contest by the Broncos.

The Red Foxes opened the day by defeating Northern Colorado 25-19, 25-21, 20-25, 20-25, 15-10 in Leavey Center.
