Volleyball Falls in Four to No. 25 San Diego

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara volleyball dropped a four-game match to No. 25 San Diego Saturday afternoon in Leavey Center.

The Toreros defeated the Broncos 25-17, 25-19, 19-25, 25-17 in the West Coast Conference matchup.

The teams were tied midway through each set but the Toreros (10-3, 4-0) were able to pull away in three of them, including the deciding fourth when they posted a blistering .543 attack percentage.

San Diego hit .231 with Laura Madill leading the attack with 45 assists. Katie Lukes collected 17 kills and Grace Frohling added 16 on a .308 hitting percentage. The defense was led by Annie Benbow, who had 18 digs, and Madill and Camryn Tastad, who had 11 apiece

Julia Sangiacomo had 18 kills and Sophia Tulino added 14 kills on a .323. As a team, the Broncos hit .138.Santa Clara got 36 assists from Nive Tuileta and 17 digs from Kat Georgiadis.

The score was tied at 13-all in the first set but the Toreros would score the next eight points to take command of the game. The final five points of the rally were attack errors by the Broncos. In the game, the Toreros hit just .062 but the Broncos managed just -.118.

In the second, it was once again tied, this time at 12, when San Diego scored four in a row. Santa Clara was able to cut the deficit to 17-15 but got no closer as the Toreros scored eight of the final 12 points.

The third set saw the Broncos hit .212 and use an 8-2 run featuring four attack errors in a row from the Toreros who hit .000.

Lukes was the key cog in the final set, posting 10 of the team's 20 kills on a .600 hitting percentage. With the set tied at 11-all, San Diego went on an 8-2 and never looked back. Lukes had four kills in that flurry. The Broncos hit a solid .312 in the set but it wasn't enough.

  • San Diego leads the all-time series, 43-34, with wins in the last 13 matchups. The first meeting between the programs occurred in 1979.
