Volleyball Beats Portland in Five Sets

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – It took five sets, but Santa Clara volleyball beat Portland 3-2 by scores of 25-22, 17-25, 25-17, 23-25, 15-12 on Thursday night to open a four-match homestand.

The Broncos (7-12, 3-4 WCC) got down early in the decisive fifth set 4-2 but rallied for seven consecutive points to get out on top 9-4. They would withstand a small run from the Pilots (9-9, 2-5 WCC) and closed things out.

Santa Clara hit .258 on the night while picking up 11 aces. Portland hit .250 with nine aces.

Julia Sangiacomo led all players with 17 kills while adding seven digs and four blocks. Nive Tuileta had 47 assists and set a career-best with six kills while also chipping in 12 digs. Layla Truitt added 13 kills as well with Sophia Tulino picking up a double-double with 12 kills and 12 digs.

On the other side, a trio had double-digit kills for Portland. Jayde Harris led the way with 15 while Maui Robins added 14 with 14 digs for the double-double. Ellin Larsson added 13 kills and hit .435. Noelani Helm had 48 assists with Grace Zilbert's 18 digs pacing the Pilots.

The Broncos strongest set was the third in which they hit .419 as a team. The second set was the best for the Pilots as they hit .393.
