Go "Green" With No. 20 Women's Water Polo Against No.2 Stanford

SANTA CLARA, Calif.- After suffering a few tough losses over the weekend, the No. 20 women's water polo team will be hosting a "green" game against No. 2 Stanford on Feb. 12. The Broncos own Julia Peters cultivated the idea for this game through her work with the the Center for Sustainability.

"I want to illustrate how simple changes in your daily lives can help make a positive impact on the environment," said Peters. "I am an intern with the Center for Sustainability and focus on Athletic Recreation. My goal is to educate my peers on simple sustainable behaviors and to create a culture of sustainability among athletes."

This is the first year the Broncos have hosted a "green" game at the Sullivan Aquatic Center.

Both teams have committed to taking measures that will make this game more eco-friendly, including properly diverting items from landfill such as ice bags, energy bar wraps and food scraps. Both teams will use reusable bottles in place of plastic water bottles.

Stanford will be taking the Cal Train down to the Sullivan Aquatic center instead of driving which will reduce carbon emissions.

The SCU Center for Sustainability will be tabling at the game to give fans more information about sustainable practices that both Santa Clara and Stanford are making. They will also be giving out helpful tips for people to practice in their own homes.

After facing tough competition at the Triton Tournament last weekend, the Broncos are ready to go up against the tough Cardinal team.

The Broncos are currently 3-4 for the season. Senior captain Kaitlin Murphy has been a crucial leader on offense this season, with 13 goals. She scored a goal to tie the game with No. 9 San Diego State to take it into overtime.

Stanford is currently 4-0 for the season. The Cardinal swept all four of their games this past weekend at the Stanford Invitational.

Be sure to come out and support your Broncos and learn some "green" practices!
