SANTA CLARA, Calif.- The No. 18 Broncos went 3-0 over the weekend picking up two conference wins over Fresno Pacific and the University of Pacific and a Senior Day win over Cal State East Bay. The Broncos are now 13-10.
Up first, the Broncos traveled down to Fresno to play against conference rival Fresno Pacific. Off an earned ejection, Julia Peters converted the man-up opportunity for the Broncos first goal of the game. The Broncos had a few more man-up opportunities but were unable to convert. In the final seconds of the first quarter, Laura Burtness found the back of the net to make it a 2-0 Bronco advantage.
Peters came out firing to start the second period scoring another goal, and
Kaitlin Murphy and
Elle Surber followed suit making the Broncos advantage 5-0 going into half.
Elizabeth Anderson added one more goal for the Broncos before the Sunbirds were able to put in their first goal of the game off of a penalty shot, 6-1. The Sunbirds put in one more, but the Broncos ended the third quarter with the lead, 6-2.
After battling back and forth for the first half of the second quarter,
Ashleigh Bandimere broke the silence for a Broncos goal. Peters followed up with a second Broncos goal, 8-2. The Sunbirds put in two more goals, but the Broncos left the pool with the 8-4 win.
To start the game, Pacific caught a lucky bounce to give them the first goal of the game. Surber came firing back with a top-corner goal to tie the game 1-1-. Peters and Murphy led the way for the Broncos in the first period, combining for five goals, giving the Broncos the 6-3 lead over the Tigers. The Tigers put in one more goal, but the Broncos closed out the first period with a two-goal advantage, 6-4.
Off and earned ejection by Surber, Peters converted the man-up opportunity giving the Bronco a three goal lead.
June Afshar came up with some big stops but the Tigers were able to squeeze one past her in a man-up opportunity, 7-5. The Tigers brought the game within one, but Peters came right back scoring her fifth goal of the game, 8-6 Broncos lead. With a goal by Surber the Broncos held a three-goal advantage going into half, 9-6.
Murphy and
Claire Eadington continued the Broncos run, opening up the third quarter with a goal each. Elizabeth Anderson earned a penalty shot that Surber put in for a goal, 12-6 Broncos advantage. Elizabeth Anderson earned another penalty shot that Sheridan scored, 13-6 Broncos. The Tigers earned an ejection and converted to end the Broncos run, 13-7. The Tigers put in another goal, but Peters kept racking in the goals, scoring her sixth to end the third quarter 14-8.
Peters started off the fourth quarter with a bar-in goal, her seventh goal of the game, 15-8. Looking for goals, the Tigers shot the ball every offensive possession they had, but Afshar came up with some more big saves to keep the Tigers at bay. The Tigers earned a penalty shot for their last goal of the game. The Broncos picked up their second conference win of the weekend taking down the Tigers 15-9.
In their senior day game, the Broncos faced off against old conference rival Cal State East Bay. After both missing opportunities, Peters found the back of the net for the first goal of the game. The Pioneers followed up with a goal to tie the game one all. With a goal by Surber and one by the Pioneers, the first quarter ended 2-2.
The Pioneers took the lead in the beginning of the second, scoring two goals, 4-2. In a man-up opportunity, Surber converted to bring the Broncos within one, 4-3. Eadington followed up with another Broncos goal to tie the game 4-4. Eadington earned an ejection that was converted by Peters to give the Broncos the 5-4 advantage. The Pioneers put in one more goals and tied the game back up at 5-5 going into half.
The Pioneers took the lead, but Burtness scored to keep the game tied, 6-6. Peters earned an ejection that allowed Eadington to convert and give the Broncos a one-goal advantage, 7-6. The Pioneers earned an ejection for a man-up opportunity but Peters stifled their possession with a big shot block to end the quarter 7-6.
Peters kept the Broncos momentum up, scoring a goal to open up the fourth quarter. Jenny Anderson put in her first goal of the game to give the Broncos the 9-6 lead. The Pioneers scored three goals but two goals by Surber maintained the Broncos lead, 11-9. The Pioneers put in one final goal but Murphy sealed the deal for the Broncos with one last goal. The Broncos sent their seniors off with the 12-10 victory over the Pioneers.
