SAN DIEGO – Despite a valiant comeback in Sunday's finale at the Triton Invitational, Santa Clara women's water polo was knocked off by Sonoma State, 5-4, on a late third-quarter goal.
The Broncos (3-6) were looking to gain at least a split on the final day of the 16-team tournament at UC San Diego, but Marist held on for an 8-5 victory in Sunday's first game.
Cathy Cantoni's goal with 3:01 left in the third quarter knotted the score at 4-all, but Somoma State's Carleigh Robinson answered less than 90 seconds later with the eventual game-winner shortly after an ejection expired.
Hailey Eberle had one goal and four steals for the Broncos who were unable score the tying goal against the Seawolves (2-9) who evened the season series after falling 8-7 at Santa Clara last week.
Sonoma State and Santa Clara each had an exclusion in the fourth quarter, but neither converted.
Mara Dominguez had a pair of goals against Marist, including one that cut the deficit to 6-3 just more than one minute into the fourth quarter. But Nastassia McGlothlin and Lexi Puhl scored 56 seconds apart to push the lead to five goals.
Dominguez and Maggie Oys added late goals for the Broncos who went 3-for-9 with the extra attacker.
Francesca Puccinelli played both games in goal for Santa Clara, registering seven saves against Marist and eight vs. Sonoma State.
Next up, the Broncos will play in the Cal Speedo Cup Saturday at Cal.
