Women’s Water Polo Edged by Azusa Pacific, 10-9, in Overtime

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – In Friday's matchup of teams batting for positioning in the Golden Coast Conference standings, Azusa Pacific was able to escape with a 10-9 victory over Santa Clara women's water polo with a late overtime goal.

After Santa Clara's Susan Providenza knotted the game at 9-all with 1:20 remaining in the second overtime, Sarah Adams answered on the ensuing possession. The senior was able to connect on the game-winner just 16 seconds later, putting the ball past Santa Clara goalkeeper Francesca Puccinelli from about 10 meters out.

Cathy Cantoni, who had a goal, assist and four steals, had her shot attempt turned aside by Azusa Pacific (12-10, 2-1) goalie Erica Marquez on Santa Clara's final possession.

Hannah Buck scored a game-high four goals and Annie Eldredge added two for the Broncos (6-15, 1-2) who held a 40-29 shot advantage, but were 1-for-11 with the extra attacker.

Megan Myers and Alex Paxton scored three goals apiece for the Cougars who have won six of their last outings.

The Broncos were able to tie the game five times, but never led as Azusa Pacific had an answer each time the Broncos mounted a comeback.

Cantoni tied the game at 6-all with 3:40 remaining in the fourth quarter, but Paxton responded with her third goal less than one minute later.

Eldredge sent the game to overtime when she took a cross-pool feed from Providenza and rifled it past Marquez.

Myers and Annalise Batcheller each scored in the first overtime for Azusa Pacific and Eldredge cut the deficit to one less than one minute into the second three-minute extra session.

Santa Clara hit two posts and Marquez had three of her 17 saves in overtime.

The Broncos will look to rebound on Saturday when they entertain Loyola Marymount (9-13, 1-2) in another conference game. Those teams are tied for fourth in the league standings.

Santa Clara will recognize its six-member senior class prior to the game, which begins at noon.
