Women’s Water Polo Drops Nonconference Tilt at Sonoma State

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – Nicole Groat (three) and Taylor Brown (two) combined for five goals to lead Sonoma State to an 8-5 victory over Santa Clara women's water polo during Saturday's nonconference matchup.

Annie Eldredge led the Broncos (6-17) with a game-high tying three goals, including the team's lone strike with six chances on the man advantage.

Leading scorer Hannah Buck was held to only one goal, but it cut the Sonoma State lead to 5-4 midway through the third quarter at Rudloff Pool.

Cassidy Mundt responded with a marker for the Seawolves (8-17) later in the period to make it a two-goal cushion again.

The Broncos went scoreless for more than 11 minutes and were unable to take advantage of a pair of fourth-quarter exclusions.

Lily Carlon and Lyndsie Williams added fourth-quarter insurance goals for Sonoma State, which evened the season series with the Broncos.

Eldredge added a late score to equal her career high in goals.

Francesa Puccinelli went the distance in net for Santa Clara, registering 13 blocks, her 10th double-digit output of the season. The Broncos kept the Seawolves scoreless in their three opportunities on the power play.

Taylor Plorin (nine saves) earned the win in goal for the Seawolves who built a 4-1 lead late into the second quarter behind two goals apiece from Groat and Brown.

But Eldredge scored in the final minute of the second period and Susan Providenza added a goal 32 seconds into the third to cut the lead to 4-3, but Groat answered with a tally on the ensuing possession.

The Broncos, who defeated Sonoma State, 8-7, in February, continue their second-ending five-game road stretch with Golden Coast Conference contests against Concordia on Wednesday and Cal Baptist the following day.
