Triton Invitational Tournament Central
LA JOLLA, Calif. - Santa Clara women's water polo closed out the annual Triton Invitational with a pair of victories.
The Broncos (3-4) defeated the Sonoma State Sewolves, 6-3, before holding off Cal State East Bay Pioneers, 7-6, on Sunday, the final day of the 16-team tournament.
Mara Dominguez had two goals and Hannah Buck the game-winner against the Seawolves (0-4) in the morning session.
After Taylor Brown of Sonoma State tied the game at 3-all, Buck and Annie Eldredge scored in the final 2 minutes of the second quarter. Dominguez's third-period insurance goal was the only scoring in the second half.
Lydia Dadd backboned the Santa Clara defense with career-high 20 saves.
In an early-season rematch, Kelly Frumkin scored twice, both on the power play in the second half, for the Broncos who held off a late challenge from the Pioneers (3-4) in the afternoon session at UC San Diego's Canyonview Aquatic Center.
The contest was tied four times in the opening three quarters, but Frumkin's second goal put the Broncos ahead 6-4 and Eldredge tallied the eventual game-winner with 2:17 left in the game.
Auriel Bill's second goal pulled Cal State Easy Bay within 7-6, but there were only 42 seconds left. Bill had the game-winner in last week's 11-10 win over the Broncos who lost to No. 7 UC Irvine, 16-3, and 11th-ranked Long Beach State, 9-2, on Saturday.
Dadd made 16 saves, Buck had a goal, an assist and three steals, and Hailey Eberle scored once and had two assists against the Pioneers who were held to 3-for-9 with the man advantage.
Santa Clara was 3 of 7 on the power play after a 3-for-5 effort against Sonoma State.
