Women's Water Polo Wins Two on Opening Day of Santa Clara Invitational

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara women's water polo rebounded from a tough Golden Coast Conference loss on Friday with a pair of wins on the opening day of its home tournament.

On Saturday at the seven-team Santa Clara Invitational, the Broncos (6-6) rolled past Redlands, 17-8, and then out-lasted Cal State Monterey Bay, 8-5.

Indiana was the other program to post a 2-0 mark, downing Sonoma State, 16-2, and getting past UC Davis, 8-5, in the final game of the day.

The Broncos were upended 7-6 by Cal Baptist in Friday's conference opener, which also took place at Sullivan Aquatic Center.

The Lancers rolled past Cal State Monterey Bay, 10-1, in Saturday's opening game, but lost to UC Davis, 10-9, in the afternoon session.

Sonoma State defeated Redlands, 14-3, in the only other game on Saturday.

Sunday's action at the Santa Clara Invitational begins at 8 a.m. with seven more games on tap.

Game One: Santa Clara 17, Redlands 8

An efficient and balanced offensive attack led the Broncos to a convincing 17-8 win over Redlands.

Emma Allegrucci, Katie Francis, Kelly Frumkin and Maggie Oys each scored two goals for Santa Clara, which posted its best scoring output of the season on just 37 attempts.

Thirteen players scored for the Broncos who tallied eight of the first nine goals in the game.

Michelle Na and Sami Walker scored two apiece for the Bulldogs (1-4) who were able to get no closer than five goals (twice in the third quarter) after Santa Clara tallied seven in the first 12 minutes of the game.

Lydia Dadd only needed to make two saves during her one half of play in net for Santa Clara, which was 3-for-5 on the power play and held Redlands scoreless on three chances. Each team scored twice on 2-meter attempts.

Oys also had two assists as did Mia Battilega.

Game Two: Santa Clara 8, Cal State Monterey Bay 5

Hannah Buck scored a game-high four goals and the Broncos never trailed in posting an 8-5 win over Cal State Monterey Bay.

Buck's two goals early in the third quarter, including the team's lone exclusion tally, extended a 5-3 lead. She added an insurance goal in the fourth period.

Hailey Eberle had both of her goals in the last three minutes of the opening quarter to snap a 2-all tie, the only one of the game.

Lydia Dadd recorded 14 saves in the win.

Lucy Gates had three goals for Cal State Monterey Bay (0-9).

NOTES
Lydia Dadd (goalie), Hannah Buck, Annie Eldredge, Lauren Paxton, Maggie Oys and Hailey Eberle have started all 12 games this season. Mara Dominguez has started the last nine contests.
• Freshamn Alexa Grau played the second half against Redlands and had three saves.
• Dadd has six games this season with double-digit blocks.

NEXT UP
The Broncos will play Indiana (9:20 a.m.) and Sonoma State (4 p.m.) on Sunday.

They may be purchased online or at Sullivan Aquatic Center, which opens one hour prior to the first game each day. PARKING
For weekday games, the Leavey Center lot, located on Accolti Way off El Camino Real, is free beginning one hour prior to the start of the game. Any other parking facility on campus will be subject to normal daily rates or restrictions, including the main structure, located on Palm Drive.
