Strong Finish to Indiana Classic for Women's Water Polo

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Santa Clara women's water had a strong finish to the Indiana Classic winning its final two games.

The Broncos (9-9) defeated Mercyhurst, 8-2, and rolled past Washington & Jefferson, 14-3, on Sunday, to close out play in the two-day tournament.

On Saturday, Santa Clara was knocked by Marist, 11-7, and then fell to host and 10th-ranked Indiana, 10-3.

The Broncos played all four games without injured starters Lauren Paxton and Mara Dominguez.

Game One: Santa Clara 8, Mercyhurst 2

Hailey Eberle posted two goals and two assists to help the Broncos to an 8-2 win over Mercyhurst.

After a low scoring first half, the Broncos had an offensive explosion in the third quarter, scoring six goals.

Gabi Sicat and Hannah Buck scored in the opening two minutes of the third to give Santa Clara a 4-1 lead. Later in the period, the Broncos then took control with three goals in less than 2 minutes, capped by Eberle's strike which increased the edge to 7-2.

Lydia Dadd played the first three quarters in net, posting six saves.

Game Two: Santa Clara 14, Washington & Jefferson 3

The Broncos had their best offensive output in the tournament finale.

Hannah Buck and Annie Eldredge posted two goals apiece in a 14-3 win over Washington & Jefferson.

Santa Clara built a 8-0 lead by early in the second quarter and never looked back as 12 players got into the scoring column.

Hailey Eberle had one goal and a career-high four assists, and Nicole Blaney scored once and posted a career-best three assists.

Freshman Alexa Grau had her most extensive time in net, playing the final three quarters and recording six blocks.

NOTES
Lydia Dadd (goalie), Hannah Buck, Maddy Gomes, Annie Eldredge, Lauren Paxton, Maggie Oys and Hailey Eberle started for the Broncos in both games.

NEXT UP
The Broncos are off until March 17, when they play Concordia and Cal State East Bay at home.
