Women’s Water Polo Unable to Salvage a Win on Final Day of Triton Invitational

LA JOLLA, Calif. – Santa Clara women's water polo was unable to salvage a victory during Sunday's action at the Triton Invitational, falling to Cal State East Bay, 8-7, and Pomona Pitzer, 8-6 in overtime.

The Broncos (2-6) lost their last three games in the two-day, 16-team tournament by a total of only five goals.

Game One: Cal State East Bay 8, Santa Clara 7

Cal State East Bay and Santa Clara continue to play closely contested contests and the latest meeting was no different as the Pioneers received three goals from Auriel Bill and the late go-ahead strike from Cheyenne Brady to claim an 8-7 win.

Annie Eldredge and Lauren Paxton each scored twice for the Broncos who played their fifth-straight one-goal game against the Pioneers (3-3).

A goal from Maggie Oys early in the fourth quarter snapped a 6-all tie, but Bill scored and Brady added the game-winner with 1:42 remaining.

Adrien Van Dyke had two goals for the Pioneers who rallied from a 6-3 deficit early in the second half.

Eldredge and Gabi Sicat had two assists, and Lydia Dadd posted 14 saves for Santa Clara, which went 3-for-6 with the man advantage.

Game Two: Pomona Pitzer 8, Santa Clara 6 (OT)

Santa Clara rallied late in regulation to tie before falling to Pomoma Pitzer, 8-6, in overtime in the tournament finale.

Goals by Hailey Eberle, Hannah Buck and Lauren Paxton midway through the fourth quarter erased a 5-2 deficit for the Broncos.

Buck's third goal of the game gave Santa Clara a 6-5 lead, but Kyla Pickell tied the game with 54 seconds on the clock.

Allision Sullivan Wu and Isabella Villa scored for Pomona Pitzer in the final two minutes of the first overtime and the Broncos were unable to answer.

Buck drew four kickouts and Emma Allegrucci three, but Santa Clara was only able convert on one of its 12 opportunities with the man advantage.

Lydia Dadd had seven blocks for the Broncos.
