Women’s Water Polo Falls to Harvard in Overtime

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Harvard rallied to tie at the end of regulation then scored three goals in overtime to pull away for a 9-6 win against Santa Clara women's water polo on Sunday.

Grace Thawley posted five goals and Kristen Hong scored twice, including the equalizer with 25 seconds left in the fourth quarter, for the Crimson (13-3).

The Broncos led 6-4 when Annie Eldredge scored on a feed from Hannah Buck with 1:42 left in regulation, but Thawley answered with a goal on the ensuing possession and Hong tied it on a counterattack strike.

Thawley and Hong each scored in the first overtime and Santa Clara (6-11) missed all five of its shots in the 6 minutes of overtime.

Emma Allegrucci and Buck got the Broncos off to strong start, each scoring in the first three minutes of the game. Harvard's Evan Tingler was soon able to tie the game 2-all on an exclusion goal.

The Broncos led 4-3 at the half after Hailey Eberle scored with 39 seconds left in the second quarter.

Thawley tied it early in the third quarter before Buck again pushed the Broncos ahead on a feed from Eldredge who had one goal and three assists.

The Broncos went just 1-for-9 with the extra attacker.

Harvard's Sam Acker earned the win in net for the Crimson with 16 saves. Lydia Dadd posted five saves for the Broncos.

The Broncos go back on the road for their next two games, playing San Diego State on Thursday (4 p.m.) and Concordia on Friday (1:30 p.m.).
