Second-Half Push Sends Women’s Water Polo Past Cal State East Bay

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara women's water polo was able to fend off a second-half challenge from Cal State East Bay to secure a 9-6 victory in Thursday's nonconference matchup.

Hannah Buck scored three goals, all in the second half, and Gabi Sicat netted the game-winner in the third period for the Broncos (8-12) in the opener of their four-game homestand.

Auriel Bill and Maci Taylor each had two goals for the Pioneers (11-12) who were held scoreless on their seven power play chances.

Annie Eldredge, who tallied three assists, and Buck had third-quarter goals, giving the Broncos a 6-3 lead, but the Pioneers pulled even on Taylor's strike with 2:13 left in the period.

However, less than one minute later Maddy Gomes set up Sicat on the right side for an even-strength goal.

Buck had one of the team's three power play goals early in the fourth quarter to make it a two-goal cushion. She another insurance marker in the closing minutes.

Cal State East Bay led for just two minutes in the game.

Bill's goal early in the second quarter gave the Pioneers a 2-1 lead, but Maggie Oys, who posted two assists, evened the score and Lauren Paxton's tally just before halftime regained the lead for the Broncos.

Lydia Dadd picked up the win in net with six saves.
