LA JOLLA, Calif. – Santa Clara women's water polo dropped both games on the opening day of the Triton Invitational, which is being held at UC San Diego.
The Broncos (2-3) lost to No. 5-ranked UC Irvine, 13-3, and then were upended by CSUN, 10-6, on Saturday.
UC Irvine 13, Santa Clara 3
Tara Prentiss scored three times and Sara Nichols and Toni Shackelford each posted two goals for UC Irvine which led from start to finish in a 13-3 win over the Broncos.
Emma Allegrucci, Abby Fleming and Malena Nguyen each scored for the Broncos who were just 1-for-10 with the man advantage.
The Anteaters scored the first five goals of the game and built a 7-1 lead by halftime with two late goals in the second quarter.
Prentice and Nichols scored early in the third period to extend the lead to eight.
UC Irvine went 3 of 7 with the extra attacker.
CSUN 10, Santa Clara 6
CSUN used a high-scoring second quarter to propel it to a 10-6 win over the Broncos.
The Matadors followed up a four-goal first period with six more in the second to hold off Santa Clara.
Emma Allegrucci, Maggie Oys and Hailey Eberle each had two goals for the Broncos.
Eberle also had two assists and a pair of steals.
CSUN scored on five of its six chances with the man advantage while Santa Clara was 2-for-9.
Allegrucci drew five of CSUN's kickouts.

The Broncos close out play in the Triton Invitational on Sunday with a pair of games. They will face Pomona-Pitzer at 9:20 a.m. and play again at either 1:20 or 2:40 p.m.
