SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Bronco Bench Foundation and Santa Clara Athletics will induct the 2019 Hall of Fame class at the Red & White Celebration on Saturday, May 18. The class features nine student-athletes across three sports, including NCAA and NFL Referee: Mike Carey.
Carey was a running back for Santa Clara football before beginning his career as an NCAA/NFL referee and a rules analyst for football television broadcasts.
As a junior in n 1970, Carey had a breakout season, rushing for 283 yards on 59 carries (4.7 yards per carry) and scoring a pair of touchdowns. Midway through the year he took over the starting roll and entered his senior campaign as the team's lead back before suffering an ankle injury. Carey finished his final season as a Bronco with three touchdowns.
His officiating career began at the Pop Warner level in his hometown of San Diego, Calif. shortly after graduating in 1972 with a degree in Biology. He rose to the ranks of the NCAA's Western Athletic Conference in 1985 and officiated three bowl games in five seasons of collegiate football.
In 1990, Carey started his NLF career as a side judge before being promoted to referee in 1995. He was the second African-American referee in league history and first to officiate the game's biggest event when he got the nod for Super Bowl XLII in 2008. In all, Carey totaled 24 seasons in the league and worked 17 postseason contests.
After his career on the field, Carey shifted to a role as a football television rules analyst with CBS Sports in 2014. He provided insight into making and reviewing decisions for officiating crews during live broadcasts and studio shows.
