Baseball Sweeps Saint Mary's on Saturday

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Solid pitching and timely hitting sent Santa Clara baseball to a sweep against Saint Mary's on Saturday in a nonconference matchup between the schools. The Broncos defeated the Gaels 5-2 in the opener and 5-3 in the second game.

Game One - Santa Clara 5, Saint Mary's 2

Dawson Brigman drove in three runs and Eamonn Lance a pair to help lead the Broncos to 5-2 victory over the Gaels (24-26).

Santa Clara (17-20) was only able to muster four hits, but made them count.

Clinging to a 2-1 lead in the seventh, Brigman laced a two-out, three-run double down the third base line off reliever Preston Howey.

Saint Mary's answered in the eighth as Justin Banks led off with a solo home run, but Locke Bernhardt (3-2), who picked up the win, induced an inning-ending double play by Ryan Novis who was the potential tying run.

Cole Kitchen, who started for the Broncos, and Bernhardt had nearly identical pithing lines. Each worked 4 1/3 innings, surrendering only four hits and one run. Kitchen's yielded run was unearned.

Alex Reelfs got the final out of the game to record his first save of the season.

The Broncos did damage in the first inning with two outs to open the scoring. John Hanley walked and Michael O'Hara followed with a double to set the table for Lance who hit a two-run single into right centerfield off starter Sam Bower.

Bower (4-5) suffered the loss despite pitching effectively. He went five innings, allowing just two hits and two runs while striking out six.

Game Two - Santa Clara 5, Saint Mary's 3

Jared Feikes tossed six innings of one-hit relief and the Broncos banged out 14 hits to defeat the Gaels 5-3.

Coleman Brigman and Dawson Brigman each had three hits, and Alex Reelfs secured his second save of the day by pitching the final three innings.

With the Broncos leading 3-1 in the fifth, Coleman Brigman's single plated pinch runner Matthew Calhoun.

After the Gaels scored an unearned run in the top of the sixth, Ryan McCarthy's infield single drove home Tony Boetto to extend the lead to 5-2 in the bottom half of the inning.

Reelfs relieved Feikes in the seventh and ran into trouble, yielding a one-out, RBI single to Austin Elder. But Reelfs retired the final two batters of the inning and the final six he faced in the game.

Matthew McGarry started for the Broncos but was lifted after walking the first three batters of the game. Feikes came in and limited the damage to just one run that inning as Talamante scored on a double-play groundout.  The Bronco right-hander retired 14 of the first 15 batters he faced giving up just a walk during that span.

The series will conclude on Sunday at noon from Stephen Schott Stadium.  With the two schools having faced each other earlier in the season as part of the WCC schedule, this weekend's four game series is counted as nonconference games that will not affect the league standings.

Except for family members of Santa Clara student-athletes, fans will not be permitted in Stephen Schott Stadium. The university will continue to evaluate policies for access to events. While the state of California announced guidance for outdoor seated venues on April 1, the university reserves the right to be more cautious than public health guidance.
