GCI Great Alaska Shootout Central | Game Notes | 2017-18 Basketball Tickets

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Santa Clara men's basketball looks to get back on the winning track when it faces Anchorage-Alaska on Thursday in its second game of bracket play in the GCI Great Alaska Shootout. The Broncos and Seawolves, host of the eight-team tournament, will meet in the consolation bracket at 9 p.m. Pacific.

Santa Clara (1-3) fell to Idaho, 69-59, on Wednesday in the opener at Alaska Airlines Center, while Alaska-Anchorage (3-3) was upended by CSU-Bakersfield, 59-39. The Broncos are making their third appearance in the 40-year tournament, which is ending this season.

Victor Sanders scored a game-high 24 points, including 19 in the second half, to help Idaho rally past Santa Clara. KJ Feagin scored a team-high 18 points for the Broncos who shot just 38 percent from the floor. Feagin's 3-pointer with 5:13 remaining gave the Broncos, who led by as many as 10 midway through the second half, a 59-55 lead, but Sanders took over from there, scoring 10 of the team's final 14 points as the Vandals showed why they were a near unanimous pick to win the Big Sky Conference. Matt Hauser and Henry Caruso each scored 13 points for the Broncos.

Feagin leads the team in scoring (18.3 ppg) on 48.2 percent shooting from the field while Caruso is second at 14.8 ppg, on 45.2 percent from the floor, and leads in rebounding (8.0 pg). Junior guard Matt Hauser leads the team in assists (4.5 pg) and senior center Emmanuel Ndumanya is second in rebounding at 5.8 per game. The Broncos are plus-5.5 in turnover margin per game, but minus-3.7 in rebounding.

YEAR TWO UNDER SENDEK
The Broncos are in their 111th year of existence, including second under Herb Sendek, who has been successful in each of his three previous head-coaching stops. With a resume that includes 18 postseason appearances and three conference coach of the year awards, Sendek, was one of the three youngest coaches with 400 or more career victories He is in his 24th season as a collegiate head coach with stops at Arizona State, North Carolina State and Miami (Ohio).

QUICK HITS
• The Broncos are playing in a neutral site tournament for the fifth-straight season and seventh time in the last eight. The Broncos play just one true road game during nonconference play with a trip to USC set for Dec. 14.
• Alaska-Anchorage, who plays in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference of NCAA Division II. Jacob Lampkin (13.0 ppg) leads three players in double figures.
• KJ Feagin, a 2016-17 all-league pick last season, was selected to the preseason All-WCC team. Last season when he missed 14 games, he was one of the most accurate shooters in the WCC. He shot a team-high 49.0 percent from behind the 3-point line, as well a team-best 87.9 percent on free throws. He also shot 49.0 percent from beyond the 3-point line in WCC games, which ranked second.
• In the first three games, the Broncos started three seniors in Jarvis Pugh, Henry Caruso and Emmanuel Ndumanya and a pair of juniors in Feagin and Matt Hauser. Freshman Josip Vrankic was inserted for Pugh against Idaho and played 23 minutes.

THE ALASKA-ANCHORAGE SERIES
The Broncos lead the series 2-1. They defeated Alaska-Anchorage, 85-66, on Dec. 29, 1983, and then fell, 72-71, on Nov. 30, 1991, with both games taking place in the Great Alaska Shootout. The Seawolves also visited Leavey Center for the Cable Car Classic and Santa Clara came out on top 78-75 on Dec. 28, 1994.

NORTH TO ALASKA
Four of Santa Clara's 12 nonconference games are part of the GCI Great Alaska Shootout, the oldest regular-season college basketball tournament, though it's in its final season. The Broncos are making their third appearance in the event, which is in year No. 40. After playing host Alaska Anchorage on Thursday, they get a day off before facing either College of Charleston or Sam Houston State on Saturday. Cal Poly, CSU-Bakersfield, Central Michigan and Idaho are the remaining participants in the eight-team event. The Broncos played during 1983-84 and 1991-92 seasons, and had a 3-2 record in those appearances.

DOUBLING UP
Henry Caruso registered his fourth-career double-double in Saturday's loss to Cal Poly, posting 14 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. The senior posted three double-doubles at Princeton. Caruso is tied for fifith in the West Coast Conference in rebounding (8.0 pg)with preseason player of the year Jock Landale of Saint Mary's.

TRENDS
Henry Caruso, a 76-percent shooter from the line at Princeton, has hit 18 of 20 (90 percent) from the free-throw line this season ... Caruso and KJ Feagin have reached double figures in scoring in all four games ... Caruso has played all but 17 seconds the last two games. He was subbed out briefly in the second half of Wednesday's Idaho contest.

RADIO/LIVE STREAM
Anthony Passarelli (play-by-play) and John Stege (analyst) will call the action during the season on radio and through TheW.tv at home. All Broncos home games and West Coast Conference contests (not on an ESPN platform) will also be streamed through TheW.tv (local blackout restrictions apply for games broadcast over the air).
