REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – Santa Clara men's rowing competed with three boats at the Stanford Invitational Saturday and Sunday to cap off the front half of the season. Saturday the Broncos took home a win with the Third Varsity 8 boat and Sunday got wins with both the Varsity 8 and 2nd Varsity 8 boats.
"The Stanford Invite is always a great test for our team and this weekend was no exception," Santa Clara head coach Jay Farwell said. "We tried a number of different line-ups and coxswains in various boats so it was a good opportunity to see what is working and not working coming into the championship segment of our season."
Saturday opened with a 3V8 race against Stanford that Santa Clara took with a time of 6:20.7, three seconds ahead of the Cardinal. Later in the day, the same boat finished second to Oregon State with a time of 6:21.4, 10 seconds behind the Beavers.
In the first 2V8 race of the day, the Broncos finished second to Stanford, 13 seconds off the lead at 6:11.7. The Broncos also finished second to Oregon State by 13 seconds at 6:10.2 later in the afternoon.
The V8 also competed twice Saturday. The first race saw Santa Clara finish at 5:55.8, second to Stanford. The second race the Broncos completed in 6:10.7, five and a half seconds behind Oregon State.
"We started off with Stanford who has a very quick Varsity 8 and solid Second Varsity 8," Farwell said. "I thought our Varsity 8 and Second Varsity 8 performed pretty well under the circumstances. Our Third Varsity 8 had a great race against Stanford's Third Varsity 8 and was able to get a win which is the first win over a Stanford boat in some time. We faced Oregon State in the afternoon session and just struggled to put together some consistent pieces across all three boats and we fell off the pace toward the end of each race."
Sunday, the Varsity 8 finished with a time of 6:18.7, three seconds ahead of UC Davis for the victory.
The 2nd Varsity 8 also topped UC Davis Sunday with a time of 6:31.5, 13 seconds ahead of the Aggies.
The 3rd Varsity 8 finished in second in its race with a time of 7:10.6 Sunday. Oregon State won the race at 6:51.9 with UC Davis coming in third at 7:14.3.
"The weekend provided some great insight into where are focus needs to be heading into the WIRA Championships at the end of April," Farwell said. "We have got to be better off the line and we have to find more closing speed at the end of the race."
