Men's Rowing Has Strong Showing at WIRAs

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Santa Clara men's rowing picked up two wins and three second place finishes at WIRAs over the weekend.

Both the Varsity 4 and Novice 4 boats won their finals with the Varsity 8, 2nd Varsity 8, and 3rd Varsity 8 all coming in second behind UC San Diego.

"I thought we had a very good team performance this weekend at WIRAs," Santa Clara head coach Jay Farwell said. "Everyone who raced took home at least a silver medal which is a testament to the effort and commitment of our rowers and coxswain group. We have three weeks to train and fine tune for Western Sprints and the team is motivated and looking forward to the opportunity to qualify for the IRA Regatta at the end of May."

The V8 boat finished with a time of 5:54.8 just one second behind UC San Diego and the V4 boat, featuring some of the same rowers, won with a time of 6:37.0, 1.5 seconds ahead of UC Santa Barbara.

"The Varsity 8 had two solid races with Sunday's grand final race providing some of our best results to date but coming up a bit short. We have been trying different lineups for quite some time and this lineup seems to have some good speed. Some of the Varsity 8 rowers also participated in the Varsity 4 event which we won."

The N4 finished 1.3 seconds ahead of second place LMU with a time of 6:49.6.

"Four of the freshmen in the 2nd Varsity 8 also competed in the Novice 4 event which they won in a competitive race with LMU," Farwell said. "It was a great race for these guys that was led by first time coxswain and varsity stroke Misha Hindery. It was really an exceptional effort by our freshmen to haul Misha down the course as our team did not have any novice coxswains so we had to improvise."

The 2V8 finished in 6:08.2, six seconds off the lead.

"The 2nd Varsity 8 also had a good weekend grabbing the silver medal," Farwell said. "This is a very young boat for us so it is great to see the development of some of our sophomore walk-ons and freshmen."

The 3rd Varsity 8 boat finished in 6:28.4, 16 seconds behind UC San Diego.

"I think this boat is making some really dramatic improvements over the course of the racing season," Farwell said.
