Santa Clara alum and former Bronco oarsman Jay Farwell '94/'01 was named director or rowing in September 2021 and is in his first year in the role.

He finished his 11th season as head coach of men's rowing in 2021-22. Farwell took the helm as head coach of the men's rowing program in September 2012. He previously coached the rowing team from 1997-2003 and is the son of one of the program's founding members, Jim Farwell '66. Jay Farwell graduated with a BA in history in 1994 and proceeded to graduate from the Santa Clara School of Law in 2001.

Under Farwell's direction, Santa Clara's Varsity 8+ and Varsity 4+ boats reached the IRA National Championship Regatta seven times, most recently in 2022. The Bronco V8 crew captured the first WIRA Championship in program history and won the Western Sprints Regatta in wire-to-wire fashion during 2015-16; the latter clinched the team's second straight IRA appearance. Bronco boats won 17 races across all levels. Farwell was named WIRA Coach of the Year while sophomore Peter Morton and freshman Grant Findlay were named First Team All-WIRA.

The Broncos celebrated their 2014-15 season with strong performances throughout the year, including the program's first appearance at the IRA Championship Regatta since 2002. Santa Clara's V8+ and V4+ boats both competed at IRAs; the V8 crew qualified with a second-place place finish at the Western Sprints Regatta. The team's all-freshman Novice 8 boat won a gold medal, the Novice 4 boat won a silver medal and the Varsity 8 boat won a bronze medal at the WIRA championships. Farwell was named co-WIRA Coach of the Year while oarsmen Ian Crutchlow and Michael Brewer were named First Team All-WIRA.

In 2013-14, the Broncos won a silver medal in the V4 race and a bronze medal in the N8 race at the WIRA Championships.

Farwell rowed for Santa Clara and became the program's head coach from 1997-2003. During his tenure the program was consistently ranked in the top-10 for the West Region. Farwell stepped down from coaching and was the Director of Compliance at SCU from 2004-06.

Farwell's father, Jim '66, is one of the founding members of Santa Clara rowing and was a head coach of both men's and women's rowing teams for more than 20 years from 1965-85. He is the namesake for the James D. Farwell Award that is awarded annually to one male and one female senior student-athlete from the sports of cross country, golf, rowing, softball, tennis, track and water polo who best combine academic and athletic excellence.

Farwell is married to Kelly Campisi Farwell '94, who graduated from Saint Mary's, and they have three young children: Stella, Giacomo and Dominic. They live in Los Gatos.

"I am grateful for the opportunity to return to the Santa Clara campus as the men's rowing coach," Farwell said upon his hiring. "We are approaching the 50-year mark for the program and there is a deep tradition of success, hard work and giving back to the program. I am looking forward to continuing these traditions with the current and future rowers of this program."

"We are delighted to welcome Jay Farwell back to campus to head up our men's crew program," said Santa Clara Athletic Director Dan Coonan upon Farwell's hiring. "The Farwell name is synonymous with Santa Clara crew. With all that Jay and his father have meant to the program through the years, there is no finer choice to accept the mantle at this time and build on the great success that Wieslaw Kujda established."
